The two Courses I would suggest on this topic are:
- The Catholic Church: A History.
- The History of Christianity: From the Disciples to the Dawn of the Reformation
The first is a broad overview covering all of catholic history from the time of Christ to the reign of pope John Paul II.
The second course is more or less an in-depth history lesson, with the lecturer emphasizing the things one must keep in mind when examining a subject of this sort. It covers next the cultural contexts, then the birth of Christianity through the beginnings of reform.
They give a look at Catholic history from the perspectives of 2 lectures from the time of Christ to the reformation and from just one lecturer from the time of the reformation until the early 2000s.
Though I started watching some of the “The Catholic Church: A History,” first, upon starting to watch ”The History of Christianity: From the Disciples to the Dawn of the Reformation,” I feel it would be better to watch it first to see the things one must keep in mind when examining a things concerning the Catholic Church as well as any other religion from a historical perspective to maximize the impact of the content, especially in assessing/finding the pertinent religious content and discovering the important parts of the religious perspective.
The next 3 blogs concerning the Great courses (which will be punctuated by a movie review and a partial book review) will go in-depth as to the content of each of these lecture, enumerating the subjects of each lecture as well as some background on each of the lecturers.
