Book Review of Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, Part 1

Loreto Publications of Fitzwilliam New Hampshire, in 2020, published a reprint of the original 1833 Edition of Father Alban Butler’s classic on The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and other Principal Saints in seven books. The histories of the saints are inspiring, full of not only inspirational actions but inspirational words and in my humble opinion this work should be in the library of every Catholic who can afford it (about $300 for the set, give or take taxes etc.) or read (at least in the saints that most interest said person) by any Catholic who cannot, by loan from the local library.  If your local library does not have it request an interlibrary loan.

This edition is introduced with a section on how in the past histories of saints were collected, information on Father Alban Butler and his collection of these histories as well as an alphabetical listing, a chronological listing within which councils, events, saints by country, sainted monarchs, anti-popes, popes and even the heretics they countered. This is a great compilation of the heroic and inspirational Catholic Christian lives lived by the illustrious saints and martyrs which we and our children should aspire to!
